Andy Cassidy shows you that you should never give up on your footballing dreams
At 50 years old, Andy Cassidy decided to do something to lose some weight, Spending 2 hours a day practicing with the ball he became known as the Welsh Maradona when some tourists filmed him playing keepyups.
He used to be a fisherman but lost that job in 2002 and has since been invited to play at the World freestyle Football Championship in Dubai! He was around 20 stone when the video was taken and used to be a lot heavier than that when he started practicing his footballing skills again. Cassidy says he’s very agile for his size and has great hand – eye coordination, balance and timing. He also says that anyone could do it, they just need to spend time practicing and since he lost his job he’s had lots of time.
The local paper “the Western Telegraph” say he’s been down in the docks practicing for years but has got a lot better than when he first started.
Andy himself says lots of kids come and try to have a kickaround but he’s so skillful they end up leaving after he’s shown them up.
Although people originally thought it was a fake video with a pro footballer wearing a fat suit or something it really wasn’t it was just Andy Cassidy, the locally well known Pembrokeshire celebrity. I wonder how he did at the competition, and if he’s still taking bookings. He should certainly think about trying to make a living out of his skill set, maybe try to get into one of those “masters” competitions.
One has to wonder if he could have had a career in football if he had started playing a little earlier.
